The other Manchester club, Manchester City are rapidly bridging the gap in stature against their more famous neighbours, Manchester United. Founded in 1880, the club plays their games at the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester.
Winning their first trophy - the FA Cup in 1904, the Manchester City side of the 1960s, won the League, FA Cup, and League Cup under legendary managers Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison. The 80s however saw the decline of Manchester City, relegated as far down as the third tier of English football, returnin to the top flight only in 2001. In 2008, everything changed for Manchester City, as they were purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group for £210 million and instantly became a financial and footballing powerhouse.
Boasting 6 league titles, one of which was won under the leadership of visionary manager Pep Guardiola 2018 with 100 points, the only side in England to have done so. They followed this success a year later by winning four trophies, becoming the only team to win the domestic treble. Manchester City remains underperforming in Europe however, their best result in the UEFA Champions League, being a semi-final in the 2015/16 season, but even European success must surely be inevitable for the deep-pocketed Citizens...
